The Bored Jar

Every week, Child Care Resources will publish The Bored Jar blog, which will provide you with ideas of activities to do with the children in your care. We know that much of the correspondence we send has to do with rules and regulations, but The Bored Jar will only be filled with fun activities. Whenever you’re bored with your kids, try some of our Bored Jar ideas!

Felted Eggs with Chicks

The eggs were made by layering wool roving over a plastic Easter egg and using the wet felting process. Layer the roving on the egg and the child work on rubbing the eggs with soap and water once the layering is done.Once the eggs are dried, use manicure scissors to cut a zig-zag across half the egg. The plastic egg was then removed. If one of the children’s eggs has a hole on the top. cut the entire top off in a zig-zag pattern.

Next, cut a diamond shape out of felt and use a needle and thread to make a stitch, creating a beak. Then trim off the extra thread. Uncolored wool roving (although yellow would look nice too) can be rolled it around in the child’s hands to make a ball/bird shape. The roving chick is then put into the egg. Add a drop of glue to the middle of the beak and attach it to the roving. The chicks are a sure sign that eventually spring will be here. They will be a nice addition to our April nature table too.
